Become Heavily Meditated10/6/2015 From time to time, we all face major life disasters to contend with. The very nature of life is that it’s ever-changing and our joys and triumphs are interspersed with periods of great challenge. Even when we are between major challenges, we can still face issues with relationships, anger, insecurity, frustrations at work, or a general dissatisfaction about where our lives are headed.
When I was widowed at age 32 with three young kids to raise on my own I felt like a victim of bad luck. I had not yet learned the skills involved in finding peace of mind and happiness, so my coping mechanisms involved numbing myself with medications in the form of prescriptions, pot and wine. I appeared outwardly functional, bumping along the day to day. Then, the next disaster popped up. In 2012, I faced a trifecta of difficult situations. I was bombarded by the loss of my job, a cherished relationship and a health issue with one of my kids and quickly ended up in big emotional trouble. I was blessed at that point, to find the right teacher who taught me how to meditate. My journey toward becoming heavily meditated instead of heavily medicated began. If we ever want to achieve a lasting sense of well-being and peace of mind we have to be willing to put the work into cultivating it. Like learning a new language or riding a bike, we should start to think about our happiness as a skill that can be developed. We commonly tell ourselves these lies that we don’t have what we need or things don’t seem to be falling into place for us, and therefore we are unhappy. We rely on external remedies such as pills or wine to fix it. Here's the truth: Your peace of mind is not found within anything external to you. It is already inside you. Think of yourself as a fine artist standing before a large, blank canvas. You have the power to paint the landscape with whatever vibrant colors you choose. To some of us, it’s a radical idea to think that we are in charge of our happiness. But we are. This is called self-agency. The power of self-agency comes with great responsibility, but what a relief to know that we aren’t simply helpless victims controlled by external circumstances and the bumpy roller coaster of life. Once I realized how incredibly effective developing my sense of self-agency was, I dedicated my life to teaching it to others. My approach as a Spiritual Life Coach begins with helping my clients establish a daily meditation practice. We begin slowly with techniques that are accessible to anyone, even if you have never meditated before. After a daily practice is established, we work on methods to cope with life’s ups and downs inspired by the ethics and teachings of eastern philosophy. We find ways to empower you and develop your self-agency by using classic, time-tested processes. You'll experience a world-view shift and develop the tools to balance effort and ease within any situation that comes up in life. It requires an investment of time and energy, but once these skills are developed they will serve you for life. If you have an interest in becoming heavily meditated check out the Spiritual Coaching section of my web site here. Sessions can be scheduled either in person or via skype. Comments are closed.
